Das Forum Romanum war einst das Machtzentrum des Römischen Reiches. Heute spiegeln zahlreiche Ruinen antiker Gebäude sowohl die beeindruckende Baukunst, als auch die üppigen Wirtschaftsverhältnisse des Imperiums wieder.
Läuft man die Ausgrabungen entlang der gigantischen Säulen und Mauerreste, bekommt man ein beeindruckendes Gespür dafür wie brillant die römische Architektur anzuschauen war.
Das Forum Romanum in Rom war das erste römische Forum. Zu Zeiten Kaiser Augustus (27 v. Chr. bis 14 n. Chr.) wurden hier weitreichende politische Entscheidungen gefällt.
Es wurden zudem Geschäfte abgewickelt, Anklagen verhängt und religiöse Heiligtümer wie den Tempel der Vesta verehrt. Weitere Infos zu Forum Romanum Ticketsfinden Sie hier.
Es ist davon auszugehen, dass im Forum viele politisch und juristisch bedeutsame Entscheidungen getroffen wurden. Die Ausgrabungen zu eines der wertvollsten Sehenswürdigkeiten Roms begannen jedoch erst zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts.
Der Triumphbogen des Septimius Servus beispielsweise wurde erst in den Jahren 1803 bis 1898 vollständig ausgegraben.
Noch heute treffen Archäologen aus aller Welt weiterhin auf außerordentliche Funde im erweiterten Areal des Forum Romanum. So fand man vermutlich den aus dem 6. Jahrhundert vor Christus stammenden Sarkophag des einstigen Stadtgründers Romulus erst kürzlich.
Viele der antiken Gebäude mussten im Laufe des 7. Jahrhunderts bedauernswerter Weise weichen. Noch heute zeugen einige der alten Bauwerke von mittelschweren Erdbeben der Zeitgeschichte. Zudem wurden immer wieder große Mengen an Travertin-Steinen für gewaltige Bauvorhaben wie dem Petersdom verwendet.

Das Forum bietet neben der großen Anzahl an antiken Tempeln einige weitere Highlights:
- Titusbogen: Der Triumphbogen erinnert an den Sieg Roms über Jerusalem. Erwurde nach dem Tod des Kaisers Titus erbaut.
- Bogen des Septimius Severus: Ein Bogen, der im Jahr 203 n. Chr. errichtet wurde, um an den dritten Jahrestag von Septimius Severus als Kaiser zu erinnern.
- Tempel des Saturn: Einst der prachtvollste Tempel im gesamten Forum. Erstmalig 497 v. Chr. errichtet.
- Tempel des Antoninus und der Faustina: Der im 2. Jahrhundert erbaute Tempel von Antoninus und Faustina ist der am besten erhaltene Tempel im ganzen Forum.
- Basilika von Maxentius und Konstantin: Eines der wichtigsten Gebäude der Antike, heute leider größtenteils zerstört
- Die Kurie: Senatsgebäude für politische Zusammenkünfte.
- Säule von Phokas: Im Jahr 608 n. Chr. zu Ehren des Kaisers von Byzanz errichtet (Höhe: 13 Meter)
Die Geschichte des Forum Romanum
Wenn Sie heute durch das Gelände des Forum Romanum spazieren und die mächtigen Ruinen passieren können Sie erahnen, welch Glanz und Ruhm diesen Ort umgaben.
Doch dies war nicht immer so. Zunächst waren lediglich die drei Stadthügel Palatin, Kapitol und Esquilin bewohnt. Am Rande des Tales gab es zudem eine Begräbnisstätte der Römer.
Erst mit dem Bau der Cloaca Maxima im 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. wurde die Fläche rund um das Forum Romanum trockengelegt. Vom anfänglichen Sumpfgebiet entwickelte sich das spätere Forum allmählich hin zur ersten Ansiedlung.
Die ersten Tempel wurden den Göttern Saturn und Castor geweiht. Erbaut wurden sie zwischen den Jahren 501 und 498 v. Chr. Es dauerte nicht lange, bis sich die neuen Tempelanlagen zum Treffpunkt vieler Römer entwickelten.
Unter der Herrschaft Caesars, erweiterten die Römer das antike Stadtzentrum ab 54 v. Chr. rasant. Seinen Plänen zu Folge sollte das neue Forum direkt am Fuße des Kapitol-Hügels angrenzen und das Alte Forum um ein Vielfaches erweitern. Seine Form sollte rechteckig werden, so wie es bei den öffentlichen Plätzen Griechenlands der Fall war.
Mit dem Streben nach bestmöglichem Ruhm, ließ Caesar schließlich auch noch die uns heute bekannten Kaiserforen errichten:
- Das Caesarforum (Foto di Caesare) -> hier wird abends eine Multimedia-Show zur Person Julius Caesars gezeigt
- Das Augustusforum (Foro di Augusto) -> hier wird abends eine Multimedia-Show zum antiken Rom gezeigt
- Forum von Vespasian mit Friedenstempel
- Trajansforum (das vermutlich eindrucksvollste Forum)
Nur etwa 50 Jahre später, sollte der Umbau des Forum Romanum unter Kaiser Augustus weitergehen. Die bis dato gebauten Holzhütten hatten für neue Tempelanlagen aus Marmor zu weichen. Zusätzlich gab es eine großflächige Erweiterung auf der Ostseite des Platzes.
Die Umgestaltung des Zentrums trug Früchte. Mehr und mehr Römer zog es zum Forum. Von hier aus wurde sich ausgetauscht und Politik betrieben. Übrigens sollen hier die berühmtberüchtigten Catilinarischen Reden gegen Catilina stattgefunden haben!
Doch nicht nur die Tempel erfüllten ihre Aufgabe mit Bravour. In den Basiliken wurde viel Handel vollzogen und allerhand Geschäftliches betrieben. Wichtige Rohstoffe wie Holz und Eisen gab es ebenso wie viele weitere Handelsgüter zu tauschen.
Doch der rasante Aufschwung des Forums brach ab. Bereits unter Kaiser Augustus Nachfolgern wurde das Forum in den folgenden Jahren zunehmend als uninteressant angesehen. Es war gegenüber neu gewonnenen Territorien wesentlich zu klein. Zusätzlich verlor die Stadt Rom an politischer Tragweite, sodass Kaiser Konstantin der Große im Jahr 330 n. Chr. bereits Konstantinopel als seine neue Residenz bevorzugte.
Spätestens mit dem Zusammenbruch des Römischen Reiches, geriet das Forum Romanum endgültig in Vergessenheit. Der einst so prächtige Platz der Ewigen Stadt verwandelte sich allmählich in eine Kuhweide. Im Laufe der Zeit sollte eine Vielzahl der Steine für neue Kathedralen und Paläste weichen.
Über die alte Hauptstraße Roms zum Forum Romanum
Den eindeutig schönsten Blick auf das einstige Machtzentrum Roms haben Sie vom Palatin Hügelgleich gegenüber des Forums. Diesen erreichen Sie am besten über den alten Hauptweg „Via Scara“, zu Deutsch: „heilige Straße“. Die Via Scara führte vom Kolosseum zur Piazza del Campidoglio und war Roms Hauptstraße.
Auf der Südseite befinden sich dort zu Ihrer Linken die gewaltigen Ruinen der antiken Gerichtshalle, die Basilika Iulia. Diese ließ Caesar zwischen den Jahren 54 v. Chr.- 44 n. Chr. in Auftrag gegeben.
Fertiggestellt wurde die Kirche jedoch erst Jahre später unter seinem Nachfolger Kaiser Augustus. Die 101 x 49 Meter große Basilika war die Größte Kirche des Forums und zog besonders an Prozesstagen regelmäßig große Scharen von Römern an.
Gleich gegenüber der Basilica Iulia sehen Sie die Basilica Aemilia , welche bereits 179 v. Chr. errichtet wurde. Folgen Sie der Via Scara, so sehen Sie weitere antike Monumente wie den Titusbogen, den Triumphbogen des Septimus Severus, die Kirchen Maxentius und Curia, die Tempel von Antonius und Faustina, den Kapitolstempel sowie die Ruinen der Markthallen und Rednertribünen.
Der Palatin Hügel
Der Sage nach gründete Romolus Rom im Jahr 753 vor Christus genau hier – auf dem Palatin Hügel. Der Palatin (Palatium, Kaiserresidenz) gilt als Ursprung der Stadt und liegt im Zentrum der 7 Hügel Roms. Neben vielen Ausgrabungen finden Sie einige interessante Gebäude vor wie den Domus Augustana (Kaiser Augustus), das Museum mit spannenden Funden und interessanten Modellen der ersten Siedlung, sowie die Gärten von Kardinal Alessandro Farnese (16. Jahrhundert).
Umringt ist der Hügel im Westen vom Tal Velabrum samt Forum Boarium, im Süden vom Circus Maximus, sowie im Norden vom Forum Romanum. Den Überlieferungen zu Folge soll sich hier bereits im 9. Jahrhundert vor Christus eine römische Ansiedlung befunden haben.
Das Kolosseum, sowie das Forum Romanum befinden sich in unmittelbarer Nähe. Es macht also Sinn, alle drei Sehenswürdigkeiten hintereinander weg zu besuchen.

Visiting the Colosseum for free
On the first Sunday of every month, free tickets are available to visit the Colosseum Archeological Park. Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis and are available at the ticket office in Piazza del Colosseo.
